gestalt psychotherapy is a branch of talk therapy that focuses on the here and now, emphasising the importance of the present moment and the person’s immediate experiences. it stresses the importance of understanding the context of a person’s life when considering the challenges they face. within the therapy, the client has space to safely explore their experiences without fear of judgment.
gestalt psychotherapy involves
a holistic approach
the therapy sees individuals as a whole, considering their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and physical sensations as interconnected parts of their experience.
awareness
the therapy encourages self-awareness, helping clients become more conscious of their thoughts, emotions, and body sensations in the present moment. an awareness of body language is also key, so during a session, a therapist will observe the client's body language and movement (for example, looking away when talking about a particular topic or wringing their hands).
dialogue
clients engage in dialogue with the therapist, exploring their current experiences, conflicts, and unresolved issues. attention to language and tone is important in therapy. as clients learn to accept responsibility, they learn to use language that reflects a sense of personal ownership rather than focusing on others. the use of "I" statements is important in therapy.
taking responsibility
therapy encourages clients to take responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, and actions, helping them understand how they contribute to their own challenges and growth.
integration
the goal is to help clients integrate fragmented aspects of themselves, resolving inner conflicts and achieving a greater sense of self-acceptance and authenticity.
gestalt therapy is about being aware of the present,
while understanding how your thoughts and emotions impact you.
